SSW Week 6 (20 Hour Famine)

The 20 Hour Famine is an event that happens every year. It is to help kids all around the world that don’t have any food, shelter, and even Families. This year the Famine is targeting a place called Bougainville, which is in Papua New Guinea. I have always wondered what it was like to be starving, and so this year I did experience hunger.

The reason why people do the Famine is to Fundraise money to help these kids who are really desperate for food. If I had to compare myself to kids in Bougainville it will be sad. They are not well educated and their brains don’t function properly because they don’t get the foods they need.

Another sad thing About Bougainville is that they don’t drink clean water. Kids there often get sick and when they go to the doctors the doctor is hardly even there. They don’t have the medicine that they really need. I had just found out something very disgusting and sad. Sometimes people In Bougainville do their business in a river, then later on they get their water to drink from their.

Some students were picked or volunteered to do the Famine. We slept over in our school library, and did exciting activities. Such as Playing a balloon game, Team challenges and even watched a movie. Even though I was hungry I still had a great time!

Week 5 SSW

On a cold wet day like this, who would even think about walking to school in this weather? Unfortunately that silly person was me. As my soaking wet clothes caused rain drops to roll down my arms and legs, my only focus was getting to school.

Week 4 SSW

That ring of rocks you see above are located somewhere in the world. Two adventures named Jack and Jill are on the lookout to find them. There is something special about those rocks that only the adventures know about.

Winter

As we all know it is obviously winter, the coldest time of the year. Winter is a good time to double-up on blankets, and if you have a fireplace, make a nice hot fire. The two things that I have listed to keep you warm in winter is what I do at home. It is constantly keeping me warm so you should try it too!

On past wet and cold days, who would even think about walking to school. I have recently seen kids walking to school in the disgusting weather, so I am not even thinking about walking. NOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT!!! I couldn’t stand the fact that I would get to school drenched in water in the freezing cold because my clothes would be soaked.

This is a movie to advertise our healthy sandwich. We made the sandwich, then planned our script and now we have finished recording. This is what we have made over the past few weeks.

Diabetes

This is the research that our groups Muri paroa and Toki have been working on about diabetes for the past week. In Room 20 at Point England school. Thanks to our awesome Teacher Mrs Squires.

There are many consequences to having Diabetes. These include stroke, dehydration, blindness, and many more. They can become a lot worse if not treated immediately and can lead to death. There are two different types of Diabetes, Type 1 and 2. You can only get Type 1 if  you are born with it, Type two is a different story. It can be passed down from the family, this is called a genetic condition.

Thirst is caused by an overflow of glucose and insulin, Building up in the body cells that are not responding to the insulin. So when it builds up there's no water to flush it back into the bloodstream. So the water from the blood cells flush the glucose and insulin out and thats why you become thirsty.

To avoid serious complications, people with diabetes need to keep their blood sugar level at an average level. A good diet, and exercise will help to control the amount of sugar that goes in the Blood stream. If the sugar level is too low then that can cause tiredness *quick note* [ the glucose is like an energy source so if there’s not enough then you're not getting that much energy.

Will.I.AM

Do you know who Will.I.AM is? If you don't he is a famous singer, and he is also in a group called 'Black Eyed Peas'. Before everything started Patrick and Vivienne greeted Will.I.AM into our school.

Today Pt.England school and some other schools had the opportunity to meet Will.I.AM, and he told us about his life and how he grew up. When he was young he lived in a poor area (which is East of Los Angeles) and his mum raised him and his brothers. He didn't get to meet his dad so his dream was to look after his mother. I think that it is pretty cool that he wasn't rich when he was young but then he became very successful in life and with music.

Will.I.AM also talked about choosing the right friends, because he said "If it wasn't for his friends he wouldn't be were he is today. When he was young he avoided being with the wrong friends, because most of the people he used to go to school with probably ended up in Jail. To me that was a good message. I have to think about choosing the right things too.

The generous Will.I.AM was kind enough to give The Manaiakalani Trust a check of $100,000. Everyone including me was surprised. That was his gift to us, so our gift to him was that Hallenstein Brothers gave him a Maori necklace.

I had fun seeing Will.I.AM but I wanted him to sing, if he comes again hopefully he would sing!!!
