Going Down To Tamaki College

“Ok Room 18 we are going to Tamaki College now”, Mr Barks said. Last week on Friday room 18 and 16 got given the opportunity to go down to Tamaki rec, for fitness and cool games.

As soon as we arrived at Tamaki College we went inside the rec - centre, and got greeted by the Tamaki students. When that was over my group and I got escorted to our destination. The first activity was a game called Octopus. Octopus is like Bull rush but different. During the game I got exhausted and dehydrated so I went for a drink. This game came to an end so we gathered together and went to our next activity.

“Blindfolded! We’re going to be blindfolded on an obstacle course!”. “Oh no!” I said. As soon as I heard that I wasn’t looking forward to it. When it was my turn I was terrified because I knew I was not going to be successful. Halfway through my turn I started to enjoy myself, I enjoy it so much that I lost control and fell off one of the planks.

Finally our last task came it was a Dougie competition. Most of the kids dougied but not all of them. I was one of the ones that didn’t because it will be embarrassing for me. The dougie comp turned it a dougie battle between Starford and Jephte, they were both doing moves that I have never seen before. These two contenders were to good so our mentors decided to make them both winners.

At the end of our session we all returned to the rec centre and said “thank you”. From there we left to go back to school. I enjoyed going to Tamaki, I also enjoyed all the fun things we did together as a group. My number one highlight would probably have to be the Obstacle course even though it was a bit scary at first. “Can’t wait till next week” I said.

First Day At Camp

Today at camp my group ( Team Respect ) have done three different activities. The first one was Box Fit and the second one was Old school games with Mr Harris. Finally, the last task was ‘ The Amazing Race ‘ Pt England styles.

Boxing is a really difficult sport, but I still managed to complete it. One of the guys taking it said that he was ranked 2nd in the world at boxing. As soon as we got into it I was really excited because I wanted to know what we were going to do. When I had finished the first thing I was really sweaty and tired.

Soon after we arrived at the Amazing Race challenge and by then I was already exhausted. The first task we did was we had to make a sling - shot and after we had made that we had to hit targets. Hitting the targets were worth points so I tried my best but I failed.

Even though it was the first day I still can’t wait until tomorrow.

Dr. Ben Carson

Do you know who Dr. Ben Carson is? If you don’t know who he is I will tell you about him.

Dr. Ben Carson is an inspirational man who is successful with his job. He is actually a Neurosurgeon. This man successfully separated twins who were born stuck together by the back of their heads. Both of them lived. 13 other people in the past have attempted to separate other twins but one of the twins died or both died.

Today the year 5, 6, 7 and 8’s of Pt . England school went to meet Dr. Ben Carson at the Telstra Clear Centre. We weren’t the only school there. Heaps of other schools arrived a little later then us. When we started we first sang the Duffy song. Then Dr. Ben Carson came out, and told us about his life and how he got to where is now.

Even before Ben Carson started telling us about his life I was glad that I had the opportunity to go there. “When I was about your guys age other kids in my class teased me because I was the dumbest kid in the class” Ben Carson said. During Ben Carson’s childhood, he told us that his mother told him and his older brother that they had to read two books a week. At the end of the week they had to have a book review about what they had read.

After a while he got used to reading books and eventually he was at the top of his class.

If you are interested in learning a bit about Ben Carson you should watch a movie called ‘Gifted Hands - The Ben Carson story’. It is a movie about his childhood and how he grew up. It is also about how he got to where he his now.

Do you think that Dr. Ben Carson is inspirational? I think he is! You never know, you could end up like him in the future.
